Athletic patients and cosmetic liposuction : helpful or hypocrisy ?
I had a patient ask me the other day what I thought of athletic patients having liposuction surgery. My response was that I'm very supportive of my athletic patients that take part in Crossfit workouts, Zumba, Olympic weight lifting, cycling and trail running. These athletes have come to our clinic over the years seeking a 'jump start' on their athletic endevours. They correctly reason that improvement in body contour will improve their self-confidence during athletic endevous, leading to more frequent workouts, more weight loss and improved fitness. I've seen this occur amongst breast reduction patients as well.
A cynic may counter by saying that no true atheltic endevour is improved with 'surgery'. I would agree. However, I have seen liposuction and breast reduction patients 'launch' new athletic endevours after surgery. Prior to their body contouring procedures, they were simply too self-conscious about their body image to even start exercising.
In summary, I'd like to pass along the observation that cosmetic surgical procedures such as liposuction and breast reduction have been life changing events for many of my patients. I've got a stack of Thank You cards and letters from patients that claim their surgical result helped them become the active and athletic person they always pictured themselves as.
If you are thinking about making a change in your active life, and believe your body image is holding you back, then give our clinic a call 425-776-0880 and let's sit down and talk about your goals.
