Botox for cosmetic masseter reduction in Seattle
Botox for Masseter Reduction
Botox is a trusted cosmetic injectable neurotoxin that is used to treat the muscles of facial expression. For over a decade, I’ve treated patients with frown lines, glabellar lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines with great success. Botox cosmetic injections are a substantial part of our Seattle cosmetic surgery practice.
Over the past three years, the numbers of patients requesting Botox for masseter muscle reduction has substantially increased. This cosmetic treatment can be used to reduce facial width, create hollowing beneath the cheek bone and improve the overall shape of the lower face. Botox treatment of the masseter muscle can also weaken it and reduce the force and frequency with which patients grind their teeth at night. This condition is called Bruxism. Often, patients with habitual bruxism develop thickened and hypertrophied masseter muscles, which increase the width of their lower face.
I’ve had good success in treating both men and women with these issues.
Key points for success in Botox treatment of the masseter include
- Knowing the facial anatomy, specifically the location and dimensions of the masseter muscle. Improper injection technique can result in a weakened or uneven smile.
- Using the proper amount of Botox. The masseter muscle group is large and must be sufficiently denervated in order to induce atrophy and weakening of its action.
- Patient selection is important. Some patients with excessive facial width have a fatty cheek due to buccal fat pad excess, and are not helped with Botox to the masseter muscles.
